Arizona Department of Veterans' Services and the Arizona Veterans' Service Advisory Commission—Sunset Factors (September 2011, Report No. 11-10)

This report provides information on 12 of the sunset factors the Legislature is to consider in determining whether to continue or terminate the Arizona Department of Veterans' Services and the Arizona Veterans' Service Advisory Commission. The Department and Commission have generally met their objectives and purposes, although previous audits conducted as part of the Department's sunset review identified a need for the Department to make improvements in several areas, including its fiduciary program and its administration of the Veterans' Donations and Military Family Relief Funds. The Department should also strengthen its oversight of benefits-counseling field offices and contractors. Because the Commission is established as an advisory body, some of the sunset factors do not apply. However, analysis of the factors that do apply found that the Commission is fulfilling its statutory purpose to provide policy advice regarding veterans' issues to the Governor and the department director.
